Smart Link Trading

How to trade links to make gain traffic, improve ranking and make sense to your browsers.

17 Oct 2004 -- Trading links to gain traffic and improve ranking is nothing new, and indeed is not "rocket science".  What makes it an interesting topic is that one of the targets -- improving ranking in search engines -- is a constantly moving goal due to the way that the search engine companies adjust their algorithms constantly.

Dark Ages

There was a time, in the dark ages of SEO, when simply trading links -- any links -- would bring value to a site.  Those days are long gone.  The growth first of FFA lists, then later of link management software and services has reduced the value of the simple link.

Until very recently hand-selected reciprocal links still meant a lot; and the still do have value, but not as much as in the recent past.  Today search engines are looking for "organic links" -- links that have grown naturally without the aid of webmasters making reciprocal agreements.

Organic Links

How do search engines determine link is organic rather than an agreed reciprocal exchange?  Well no way is perfect but if you, as a human, can tell then surely some way of estimating programmatically is possible.

There are two big clues:

  • if Site A links to Site B and Site B links to site A then this much more like to be a reciprocal link
  • if the link is on a page which contains mostly outgoing links, then this is another indication.

In the second case it is harder to tell of course, it may just mean that this site is really a directory or authority site.  And indeed there is a theory that Google is looking for, and rewarding sites, that posses "authority"; such as directories.

Fake Directories

This has lead to a large number of "fake directories" springing up which typically rank well, positioned in the first few pages of results, but rarely reach the top position for any word.
